Powell Middle School hits the list
Help is on the way for Powell Middle School.
When the school board released its "preliminary capital improvement plan forecast (hows that for saying, This aint a sure bet!)" earlier this month, Powell Middle School was listed with a $16 million price tag.
Powell Middle is ahead of all other schools in Diane Doziers 7th district. And its slated for improvements in fiscal year 2007.
We joked that Brickey School had been on the school boards five year plan for about 12 years. But Dozier was tenacious in getting her colleagues to fund that project. And when the experts studied the facility, it was decided to tear down the old structure and rebuild a state-of-the-art school.
Dozier is not making promises. But she said, "We will be asking an architect to do a schematic plan of the total project. Then, after looking at various options, well decide what to do first.
"Our intention for Powell Middle is similar to the recent Karns Middle renovation and addition project."
Dozier and Powell Middle principal Glenn Marquart, along with PTA parents, toured the Karns facility recently. They asked the principal what is important to consider when working with an architect.
Dozier said she personally favors building classrooms now to get the kids out of portables, but with the pressing needs across the county, shes opting to go with the capital plan that could pay off with more substantial improvements possibly a new gym or cafeteria/kitchen.
"This project is desperately needed, and if it happened tomorrow it wouldnt be too soon," she said.
The Powell Middle project takes its place on the five year plan behind the new Ridgedale Elementary and a $6.5 million renovation and expansion at Holston Middle both projects currently underway. The next big items are a $2.2 million library and cafeteria at West High, $13 million each for new schools at Gibbs Elementary and Cedar Bluff K-3, and $7 million for improvements at Karns High.
Its all or nothing for the school systems projected interior paint list. Take a look:
Paint schedule (north)
2015 Powell Elementary, Powell High, Copper Ridge, Sterchi
2018 Powell Middle
2022 Brickey-McCloud
In defense of the plan, what would you do if you were put in charge of school maintenance with a limited budget, then got phone calls from school board members wanting immediate attention? You would draw up a painting schedule like the one above and tell them to stand in line or give you more money.
Of course, theres the other side: Give the paint money to the PTAs and theyll have every school in Knox County painted within a year.
